The largest regatta in the world

The largest regatta in the world

Barcolana is the Most crowded sailing regatta, and in 2025 it will celebrate its 57th anniversary. Every second week of October, Trieste transforms into the capital of European Sailiing

In 2019, Barcolana was entered into the Guinness World Records as the “largest sailing race”: 2,689 boats and over 16,000 sailors took part in the event.

This is a race for everyone

From champions on big high-tech racing yachts to families with children on leisure boats.

The entire fleet starts at the same time, offering spectators and participants a breathtaking view of thousands of sails on the water.

The 15-nautical-mile (29 km) course runs through the picturesque Gulf of Trieste.

BARCOLANA is not just a regatta, but a whole week of vibrant events.

Races of vintage sailboats, night competitions, kids’ regattas, SUP races, and even kite races turn it into a true sports festival.

On land, the city comes alive with concerts, exhibitions, food fairs, and meet-and-greets with famous sailors.

Piazza Unità d’Italia becomes the epicenter of a celebration that takes over the entire Trieste – sails on the horizon, music on the waterfront, and thousands of happy people onshore and at sea.

Participant reviews:real emotions and inspiration for new adventures

I’m used to competitive regattas with professional teams and a focus on result, so I joined this regatta mostly out of curiosity — to see how a more open format works. And I was pleasantly surprised.

Our team brought together people with varying levels of experience, but during training it became clear that everything clicked — everyone genuinely wanted to race and compete, not just go for a ride. The skipper struck a great balance between discipline and enjoying the process.

But the real standout was the atmosphere around us: the city, the music, the great food, and the sheer number of participants. This regatta truly captivated me. I’m glad I gave it a try — this format delivers emotions that pure sport sometimes lack

I had sailed a couple of times before, but it was my first time experiencing a format like this — and it was pure joy! Everything was organized perfectly: the boat, the crew, the hotel, dinners, entertainment — you didn’t have to worry about a thing, just enjoy the moment.

I absolutely loved the atmosphere — it felt like you were in a real race, which was such a thrill, but at the same time everything was easygoing, fun, and full of great people. We trained, we partied, we chatted — it was the perfect mix of adventure, the sea, new connections, and unforgettable moments.

I already want to do it again!

I’d dreamed to take part in the Barcolana for many years. It’s the kind of regatta everyone in the sailing world has heard of. Last year, I finally made it — and the experience exceeded all my expectations.

The scale is overwhelming: thousands of boats of all sizes, all sailing the same course — it’s an absolutely breathtaking sight.
The organization was flawless: the boat was ready, the crew assembled, a great skipper, intense training sessions, and comfortable accommodation.

I truly enjoyed every moment — both on the water and on shore. Thank you for making a dream come true.

After dozens of regattas under my belt, it’s hard to surprise me. I’ve seen all kinds of formats — from intense racing to laid-back sailing trips. But this experience was something entirely different.

Everything impressed me — in the best way possible. First of all, the scale: hundreds of yachts at the starting line, moving so tightly and beautifully it took my breath away. Huge crowds along the waterfront, applause from the shore, photos, cheers — you don’t just feel like a participant, you feel like part of something bigger.

It truly felt like I was part of a one-of-a-kind event!
